FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- APRIL 17, 2009--L & H Industries of Newport Beach, California is recalling its 3 ounce Frozen Bananas covered with chocolate and peanuts with the trademark name Nutty Nanners because it has the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.
The recalled product was sold as “World Famous Gourmet Nutty Nanners Frozen Bananas 3 ozs (85gm), UPC Code 72932 40444 7, packaged in a clear paper wrap, 24 individual wrapped bananas per cardboard box labeled with manufacture dates ranging from January 1, 2007 through January 30, 2009 and with expiration dates ranging from January 1, 2008 through January 30, 2010. The affected products were primarily distributed through wholesalers in the greater southern California area.
No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this problem.
The potential for contamination was noted after the State of Texas Department of Health and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) performed inspections at the Peanut Corporation of America (PCA) facility in Plainville, Texas. L & H Industries obtained their peanuts used in the manufacturing of the Nutty Nanners from PCA. The company immediately began using peanuts from a different supplier than PCA upon notice from the State of Texas Department of Health and the Food and Drug Administration about the potentially contaminated product.
