FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- March 24, 2009 -- Andronico’s Market of Albany, CA is recalling its “ALL NATURAL PEANUT BUTTER”, UPC 205115, because it has the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.
The recalled "All NATURAL PEANUT BUTTER" was produced daily in the San Francisco store bakery department using a small, dedicated peanut butter grinder. Customers did not use the machine. The product was only distributed by the Andronico’s Market located at 1200 Irving Street, San Francisco, CA 94122.
The peanut butter was sold by the pound in clear plastic tubs, ½ pint and pint size with a UPC code of 205115 on the container. The product label indicated a 60-day expiration date from the date of grinding. The last day of production was February 11, 2009 with a consume by date of April 8, 2009.
Consumers who purchased “ALL NATURAL PEANUT BUTTER” should immediately discontinue usage and return the remaining product to the San Francisco store for a full refund.
No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this problem.
The potential for contamination was confirmed after the Texas Department of State Health Services issued a recall on February 12, 2009 of all product produced by the Peanut Corporation of America (PCA) plant in Plainview, TX following an inspection of the facility and found it to be manufacturing under unsanitary conditions. Later inspections and testing by Texas Health Officials confirmed the presence of Salmonella in peanut meal at the plant.
Production and sale of “ALL NATURAL PEANUT BUTTER” at the Andronico’s Market San Francisco Store was discontinued on February 12th when the first recall notice was issued by the Texas Department of State Health Services.
