Zenobia Company Conducts Nationwide Voluntary Recall Of California Pistachios Because Of Possible Health Risk

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- Bronx, NY -- April 15, 2009 --- Zenobia Company of Bronx, NY is recalling California Pistachios, because they have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella. This recall is a result of the Setton Pistachio expanded recall action of 4/6/09.

Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.

In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.

The California Pistachios were distributed nationwide through one distributor, through retail stores, and internet sales.

The following products are involved in this recall:

The recalled codes on the above products range from Lot # 8301 to 9083.

No illnesses have been reported to date.

Zenobia Company has ceased the production and distribution of its California Pistachios as the FDA continues its investigation as to what caused the problem.

Any Zenobia California Pistachios purchased after October 27, 2008 should be returned to the company. Please contact the company to make arrangements to return the recalled pistachios for a full refund.

Consumers that have the above product on hand should not consume it and should return it to the place of purchase for refund. Consumers with questions may contact Zenobia at 1-866-936-6242, Monday through Friday 8 am – 5 pm EDT.
