Renfroe Pecan Company Recalls Nationwide Pistachios

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- Pensacola, Fl –April 8, 2009 -- Renfroe Pecan Company is recalling all products containing Pistachios, because of the possibility of Salmonella contamination. Salmonella is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes-fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella, often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.

Pistachios were distributed nationwide through mail order and sold locally in our retail store.

No UPC codes or lot codes appear on the products. There is a bar code with an Item # on the label.

The following items were sold containing Pistachios:

• Item 846-Inshell Roasted & Salted Pistachios, packaged in a 16oz clear cello bag with the J.W. Renfroe Pecan Company label.
• Item 846FR- Inshell Roasted & Salted Pistachios, packaged in a 16oz clear cello bag with the J.W. Renfroe Pecan Company label.
• Item 846RMIC-Inshell Roasted & Salted Pistachios, packaged in an 8oz clear cello bag with a silver label with lettering “rmic” within a circle of stars.
• Item 848-Shelled Roasted & Salted Pistachios, packaged in a 16oz clear cello bag with the J.W. Renfroe Pecan Company label
• Item 222-Imperial Mix, packaged in a 16oz clear cello bag with the J.W. Renfroe Pecan Company label.
• Item 91A-Fancy Nut Tin, packaged in an octagonal sectioned liner inside a decorative gift tin. Pistachios included in the Imperial Mix section of the liner, with the J.W. Renfroe Pecan Company label.
• Item 92B-Blue Snowman Stack Tin, packaged in a 4oz clear cello bag included in the gift tin, with the J.W. Renfroe Pecan Company label
• Item 90-The Trendy Snack & Coffee Combination contained Item 846, Roasted & Salted Inshell Pistachios in a 16oz clear cello bag with the J.W. Renfroe Pecan Company label.
• Item 95-The Deluxe Snack Assortment contained Item 846, Roasted & Salted Inshell Pistachios in a 16oz clear cello bag with the J.W. Renfroe Pecan Company label.

Pistachios were also sold in bulk cases and labeled “California Pistachios”, with “Setton Pistachio of Terra Bella, Inc.”

The potential for contamination was noted after routine testing by the company that supplies Pistachios to Renfroe Pecan Company. The company has ceased the production and distribution of the product as FDA and the company continue their investigation as to what caused the problem.

No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this recall.

Renfroe Pecan Company urges anyone that has Pistachios (either Inshell or Shelled) or Imperial Mix not to eat the product and to return Pistachios to the store for a refund.
