FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- Del Mar, Calif. (March 16, 2009) - Honest Foods™ has announced a nationwide voluntary recall of its Choco Peanut Butter Baked Whole Food Bars due to concerns over possible contamination with Salmonella. The Choco Peanut Butter Baked Whole Food Bars were manufactured using peanut parts sourced from the Peanut Corporation of America’s Texas manufacturing facility, which has been the subject of an ongoing investigation by the FDA. Other flavors and varieties of Honest Foods are not affected by this recall.
Salmonellais an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.
Honest Foods Choco Peanut Butter Whole Food Bars affected by this recall were distributed throughout the U.S. and sold by grocery, natural food and online stores nationwide in addition to direct orders taken on the Honest Foods Web site at www.honest-foods.com.
The following Honest Foods Choco Peanut Butter bars are being recalled. The “Best By” dates are located on the individual bars, and there is no expiration date on the retail 12 count box.

No known illnesses have been reported to date in connection with the Honest Foods Choco Peanut Butter Whole Food Bars. The recall commenced after it was determined that the peanut product was manufactured by Peanut Corporation of America's Texas Plant, which is included in the voluntary recall initiated by the FDA. Annona Company LLC, makers of Honest Foods Country Squares and Baked Whole Food Bars, has temporarily ceased the production and distribution of the product while the FDA continues its investigation as to what caused the problem.
Consumers who have purchased Honest Foods Choco Peanut Butter Baked Whole Food Bars are urged to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund or contact the company directly. Consumers with questions may contact Annona Company LLC at 858-922-2739 between 8 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. PST.
