FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- March 12th, 2009 — Fullerton, California — Dr. Smoothie Brands of Fullerton, California, today announced an expanded recall of the Peanut Butter Crunch Bio Bar that contains peanut products. This is a precautionary measure resulting from the PCA (Peanut Corporation of America) expanded recall for all products that have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella.
Salmonella is an organism, which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more serious illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.
Dr. Smoothie Brands Peanut Butter Crunch Bio Bars were distributed nationally through retail health food stores, wholesalers and direct to customer sales.
Peanut Butter Crunch Bio Bars distributed from February 20, 2007 to February 26, 2009 are involved in this recall. Potentially affected products can be identified by the following LOT NUMBERS:

The bars are packaged in 2.0 oz individually wrapped in 15 pack printed cartons.

No known illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this product. The recall was initiated after it was determined that the peanuts used in the bars were manufactured by Peanut Corporation of America. Dr. Smoothie Brands has informed the FDA of its actions and is fully cooperating with the Agency.
