HANOI, March 24, 2009 — Today, the United States joins the Government of Vietnam and international and local partners in commemorating World Tuberculosis (TB) Day. Worldwide, the number of deaths from TB decreased since 1990, but the disease continues to claim more than 1.7 million lives each year. In Vietnam since 1995, the U.S. government has worked with the National TB Program of the Vietnamese Ministry of Health and has contributed more than $10 million to help combat TB through the U.S. Agency for International Development and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention of Department of Health and Human Services.

HANOI, March 13, 2009 – Fifty Vietnamese veterinarians working in regional and provincial government offices will be trained this year under a new program to enhance their ability to effectively control, detect, and respond to outbreaks of avian influenza.   The Applied Veterinary Epidemiology Training Program (AVET), which is supported by the U.S. government through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and the U.N. Joint Program in Vietnam, will provide the veterinarians with three months of theoretical and practical instruction to increase their skills.

Tourism ministers from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) welcomed a new United States Agency for International Development (USAID) project to work with the ASEAN Tourism Association (ASEANTA) to develop a marketing strategy that promotes Southeast Asia as a regional destination.

The campaign will encourage travelers to visit multiple Southeast Asian destinations, stay longer, and spend more money in the region.  The drive is part of the USAID’s ASEAN Competitiveness Enhancement (ACE) project which fosters greater economic integration among ASEAN’s members: Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.
