FORTUNA -- If there's anything common among the 27 North Coast residents honored at the Humboldt County American Red Cross' seventh annual Humboldt Heroes Recognition Luncheon Friday, it's a foot-shuffling modesty and slight discomfort at finding themselves in front of an enthusiastically applauding crowd.

There's also quick-thinking, bravery and a willingness jump in and do what was necessary -- whether it was saving a life or bringing much-needed round-the-clock medical service to a remote rural community.

01/15/2009 Locals Rally Behind Conservation Corps

The governor's suggested dismantling of the California Conservation Corps has drawn out supporters to vouch for its preservation -- but the administration is holding that it's just too expensive.

The corps is known for its trail building, wildfire suppression support and efforts to rehabilitate damaged salmon habitat. It's often seen as a key nudge for kids teetering between trouble and productivity.

But Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger sees the CCC's cost to the state's general fund as too high to justify with a projected $42 billion deficit.

A rash of structure fires over the weekend has left some families homeless for the holidays.

Firefighters throughout the county fought several structure fires over the weekend, including two homes in Eureka, one in Garberville, one in Rio Dell, and one in Hoopa. Eureka also had two other commercial fires.

The latest house fire occurred at around 3:30 p.m. Sunday in Rio Dell, and displaced a family of four with two young children.

”The house was totally destroyed,” Rio Dell Fire Chief Shane Wilson said.

Swine Flu Update April-27-2009

The American Red Cross is monitoring the developing situation with this new strain of human swine flu and is in close contact with federal and state officials, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Department of Homeland Security.

In addition to updating preparedness plans, the American Red Cross recommends that people should also follow common sense basic public health practices, such as covering your cough/sneeze with a tissue, frequent hand-washing, visiting a doctor for flu-like symptoms and staying home when sick.
