Aviation Accident Database Query Questions


How do I find factual information about an aviation accident in the NTSB’s Accident Database?

You can find a factual synopsis about an aviation accident by either searching according to the accident date in the NTSB’s index by month or by using the NTSB Aviation Accident Database query form.

Who do I contact regarding requests for data?

You may email requests concerning NTSB aviation accident data to avdata@ntsb.gov.  Note that information about individual accidents, including probable cause and brief reports, can be accessed using the NTSB aviation accident query page.

How do I find out the probable cause of an accident?

If you know some basic information about the accident, such as accident date, location, or the airplane registration number, you can find information about the accident using the NTSB aviation accident query page.  The query page will generate a list of accidents that meet your search criteria, and links to factual reports, and probable causes (or to preliminary reports for investigations that are currently underway.)

How can I access the NTSB aviation accident database?

For simple queries, you may use the NTSB aviation accident query page.  For more complex queries, users may download the entire aviation accident database or may email requests to avdata@ntsb.gov.

How do I get a copy of an older accident report?

Please visit the NTSB’s Data & Information Products page for information about obtaining copies of accident reports that were published before 1996.

How can I search for a safety recommendation on a particular subject?

You can query the NTSB’s Safety Recommendation Database by keyword or you can use our site search tool to search the full text of safety recommendation letters.

The NTSB recently made recommendations about a particular safety issue but my agency/company is not taking the recommended action. How do I report this problem to the NTSB?
