Drug Courts and the Role of Graduated Sanctions

Drug courts use a pretrial intervention process to encourage drug-involved defendants to enter into treatment. The NIJ Research Preview, Drug Courts and the Role of Graduated Sanctions, summarizes a study of a promising Washington, D.C. drug court program. The study found that the program was successful because of the swift application of established sanctions when participants violated the rules of treatment.
