The Rebirth of Rehabilitation: Promise and Perils of Drug Courts

June 2000
The rise of the drug court "movement" may be best understood in the context of the changing goals of sentencing policy in the United States. The Rebirth of Rehabilitation: Promise and Perils of Drug Courts discusses key elements of drug courts and additional areas where the drug court approach may be useful. This NIJ Research in Brief also provides details of Delaware's experience to illustrate the evolution of drug courts. Preliminary evaluations suggest that drug court graduates in Delaware reoffend less often than other sentenced offenders and that their crimes usually are far less serious. Current briefs in this series from the Executive Sessions on Sentencing and Corrections also focus on the emergence of "technocorrections," the processes and goals of prisoner reentry, and the "parallel universe" approach to prison management.
