All Post Offices Open New Years Eve, Many Closing Early

Regular mail delivery unaffected by the change

INDIANAPOLIS, IN — All Post Offices within much of Indiana will be open New Years Eve, however many will shorten retail lobby hours to enable retail employees to spend more time with their families. Regular mail delivery for Dec. 31 will be unaffected by the change.

“Many businesses close early New Years Eve,” said E. Lynn Smith, District Manager for Customer Service and Sales, Greater Indiana District of the U.S. Postal Service. “The number of customers visiting our lobbies Dec. 31 greatly diminishes. We view this as an opportunity to allow our retail employees more time with their families by closing retail operations in many locations early Dec. 31.”

Customers should check with their local Post Office for retail business and when last collection for mail deposited in blue collection boxes will occur on Dec. 31. Commercial customers should check with their Bulk Mail Acceptance Unit for Dec. 31 hours of operation.

All Post Offices will be closed Jan. 1, however Express Mail will be delivered New Years Day. Regular mail delivery will resume Jan. 2.

An independent federal agency, the U.S. Postal Service is the only delivery service that visits every address in the nation, 146 million homes and businesses, six days a week. It has 37,000 retail locations and relies on the sale of postage, products, and services to pay for operating expenses, not tax dollars. The Postal Service has annual revenues of $75 billion and delivers nearly half the world’s mail.
