Number of New Awards Anticipated: At least one award will be made under both of the two specific categories of activities delineated as Category 1 and Category 2. (See Types of Projects for more on the categories.) Additional funds will be distributed between Category 1 and Category 2 grants based on the quality of the applications.

Average Award:

• Category 1 - $750,000 annually for a total of $2,250,000 over a 36-month project period
• Category 2 - $2,000,000 for a project period up to 36 months.

Range of Awards:

• Category 1 - $500,000–$1,000,000 annually for a total of $1,500,000–$3,000,000 over a 36-month project period
• Category 2 - $1,000,000–$3,000,000 for a project period up to 36 months.

Available Funds: Approximately $12 million (Note: Contingent upon the availability of funds and the receipt of a sufficient number of high-quality applications, we may make additional awards in FY 2006 from the rank-ordered list of unfunded applications from this competition.)

• Category 1 - Annual funding cycle with an initial award and up to two continuation awards: We will make an initial award to a successful Category 1 applicant for a twelve-month budget period. Continuation funding for the remainder of the project period (which may be up to 36 months) will be contingent on future Congressional appropriations and the performance of the grantee.
• Category 2 - A successful applicant will receive a one-time award for the full project period from the funds available for this competition.
