Avengers headed home from Japan, MEU

The members of Marine Attack Squadron 211 along with the squadron's eight AV-8B Harriers are scheduled to return Monday and Tuesday after a deployment to Japan and a tour with the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit. The Wake Island Avengers left Yuma in January to begin a deployment that would take them throughout Southeast Asia and Australia, as well as stops at the small Pacific island where they got their name.

Next station CO named

The station's next commanding officer was announced July 28 by the Marine Corps' fiscal year 2010 colonel command screening board. Col. Mark A. Butler, who is currently serving as the assistant deputy director of operations for operations team two under the Joint Chiefs of Staff, is scheduled to replace current station CO, Col. Mark A. Werth in June 2011.

PMO urges vigilance for parents after reports of unattended kids rise

The provost marshal's office asks station residents to stay vigilant of their children's whereabouts after noticing a recent spike in reports of unattended children in base housing. Not only is it dangerous for children to be left alone to wander through housing unaccompanied, it is also a violation of station order P11101.22B, the family housing manual.

Snipers, Sharpshooters train

Marine Fighter Training Squadron 401 traveled to Miramar, Calif., to train in air-to-air combat, from Aug. 3 to Friday. The VMFT-401 Snipers travel all over the country to train pilots in air combat techniques and dogfighting.

Construction continues on station

The station Installations and Logistics department is currently multitasking construction and renovation projects to benefit personnel here. Station I&L started some major construction projects last year, such as building a new barracks and Marine Corps Exchange. They also rolled into this year with an all-purpose sports field, as well as an addition to the station gym.

Station PMO to remove unregistered, abandoned bicycles

The provost marshal's office will begin confiscating unregistered and abandoned bicycles in barracks around the station Monday. The initiative is in compliance with Marine Corps Order 5530.14A, which outlines the Corps' policy on lost, found and abandoned property.

Dove hunting to start in September

The fall dove hunting season from Sept. 1-15 offers a unique opportunity to station personnel and retirees to hunt lands not open to the general public. The area between County Roads 13 and 14, and Avenues 2E and 3E is owned by the Marine Corps and will be available for hunters 30 minutes prior to sunrise until noon each day, said Michael Waliszewski, station range warden.
