EPA Launches "Make A Difference" Campaign

Students at Youth Environmental Symposium workshop in San Diego

EPA launched its "Make A Difference" campaign on October 20, 2003 in San Diego, CA at the Youth Environmental Symposium. The event, cosponsored by the Agency and the city's Environmental Services Division, attracted over 400 students in Grades 7-12, who participated in a morning of workshops on air, water and waste issues and presentations on environmental career opportunities.

"We all share in the responsibility for safeguarding our air, our water and our land", EPA's Region 9 Administrator Wayne Nastri told the participants in his opening remarks. In challenging the youth to "make a difference" in the environment, Nastri said "Today, you will learn how air, water, and lifestyles affect not only the San Diego environment, but also the Earth's. You will learn about diverse occupations that are essential to maintaining a healthy environment. And, you will learn that preserving and protecting our environment is everyone's job."

The cornerstone of the campaign is a free kit entitled "Your Life, Your World, Your Choices" that contains a number of innovative resources to help teens learn more about waste in the environment and how they can "make a difference" by reducing, reusing, and recycling waste in their homes, schools and communities.

The "Make A Difference" campaign is part of EPA's Resource Conservation Challenge (RCC), a national crusade to help Americans recognize waste's tremendous impact on our environment. The Resource Conservation Challenge is about changing lifestyles, asking businesses and consumers to reduce their impact on the environment.
