Governor David A. Paterson Addresses NYS Senior Citizens' Day- May 6, 2009

Hundreds of older New Yorkers packed the Albany Convention Center for the annual NYS Senior Citizens' Day Celebration. Information booths from state and federal agencies, as well as senior membership organizations lined the Convention Center and entertainment provided by senior organizations and centers from across the state entertained the audience between speakers and special awards. Governor Paterson addressed those present, as did Senator Malcolm A. Smith, Majority Leader of the NYS Senate and both chairman of the aging committees in the Legislature- Assemblyman Jeffrey Dinowitz and Senator Rev. Ruben Diaz. State Office for the Aging Director Appointed to Governor's Task Force on Public Employee Retirement Benefits

Governor David A. Paterson issued an Executive Order establishing the New York State Task Force on Public Retiree Health Benefits. The Task Force will study health care benefits provided to employees of the State and local governments in New York by specifically addressing the preservation of quality retiree health care, and ways to make health care more affordable for local governments.

Social Security's Economic Stimulus One-Time Payments

President Obama recently signed the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. The act provides for the one-time payment of $250 to individuals who get Supplemental Security Income (SSI) or Social Security benefits. 364,000 NY Households Received $5.6 Million in Fresh Produce in 2008

Farmers Market Nutrition Program Provided Fresh Local Produce to Families
New York State Agriculture Commissioner Patrick Hooker, State Office for the Aging Director Michael Burgess and New York State Department of Health Commissioner Richard Daines today announced that over 364,000 nutritionally at-risk households benefited from the States Farmers Market Nutrition Programs last year. Eligible seniors and WIC participants redeemed over $5.6 million in Farmers Market Nutrition Program checks in 2008 to purchase fresh, locally grown fruits and vegetables at farmers markets across the State.
