USAID is working in partnership with several U.S. corporations to help rebuild infrastructure and deliver services to Thai communities affected by the December 2004 tsunami.
Through this project, USAID secured the donation of a large drinking water purification system from Parkson Corporation, a U.S. supplier of water and wastewater systems. Valued at $400,000 the new water system will not only give 850 people access to safe drinking water — it will also strengthen existing water resources in the community.
USAID conducted a joint assessment with Thai experts, in consultation with local authorities, on the planned water system. Authorities have approved the site plan, and the system is scheduled for delivery.
USAID is providing overall technical oversight and coordination for the project. When the system arrives, USAID will help coordinate installation and train water system operators.
