“Water, sewage, garbage collection, road repair and filling swamps are all problems neglected by the previous government of Saddam Hussein.
“Now we've reached a good stage in our work and have a planning process. Without U.S. help, there would be no office, no plan and no authority."
- Nedda Audah Hussein, Director of the Nasiriyah City Planning Office

Nedda Audah Hussein looks around the crumbling streets and buildings of her home town and sees the future -- what it might become. The 35-year-old Iraqi Director of the Nasiriyah City Planning Office is working to revive her ancient city. With help from USAID, working with the Coalition Provisional Authority, Hussein was able to set up an office, draw up a budget, and begin planning urban services for 1.5 million people in Nasiriyah and 20 nearby towns.
