Koidu Government Hospital Renovated |
USAID helps reconstruction and reintegration in Sierra Leone after the war |
|
USAID provided funding to complete the reconstruction of the Koidu Government Hospital. The project assisted in the country's on-going process of reintegrating ex-combatants into local communities by employing 80% of local labor - including ex-combatants and war-affected returnees.

Before
Sophie Goudet, head of mission for non-governmental organization PremiƩre Urgence, described the health situation in Koidu as "alarming" when she came to work in the region just after the war. Koidu residents and PremiƩre Urgence staff set to work in early 2003 to restore the war-damaged district hospital.

After
USAID provided the new hospital with beds and bedding kits, as well as a second operating room. The hospital is now open to provide health care services. Local staff have also been trained in masonry, carpentry, electrical repair, and painting to ensure proper building maintenance.
