. . . ARS scientists Kris Havstad and Deb Peters, working with the New Mexico Agricultural Experiment Station, have been awarded a grant from NSF for $238,000 for construction of a multi-user facility at the Jornada Experimental Range. This facility will be used to support activities of scientists from the USDA and other collaborating institutions working at this ARS research site outside of Las Cruces, NM. The funds were awarded from the NSF Division of Biological Infrastructure, Biological Field Station and Marine Laboratories program.

. . . Scientists at the Jornada Experimental Range in Las Cruces, NM, led by Brandon Bestelmeyer, have received a $223,351 grant from the USDA-CSREES National Research Initiative for Biology of Weedy and Invasive Species to mitigate shrub invasion in the southwestern United States. Working with colleagues at both the University of Arizona and New Mexico State University, this group will use hierarchical spatial data analysis (focused on soil and climate mapping tied to ecological site descriptions), historical reconstructions, and experiments to create predictions of grasslands that are at risk of desertification and where shrub control will successfully mitigate desertification at a regional scale

. . . Scientists at the Jornada Experimental Range in Las Cruces, NM, led by Brandon Bestelmeyer, have received a $107,000 grant from the USDA-CSREES National Research Initiative for Rangeland Research. To develop data-based ecological models of vegetation dynamics in arid ecosystems. Working with colleagues at Texas A&M University and Colorado State University, this group will examine how long-term datasets and geospatial data in several biomes of the western U.S. can be integrated to develop quantitative criteria and database support for state-and-transition models developed by the USDA-NRCS
