Figure 9.4 is titled "Past Year Nonmedical Prescription-Type Psychotherapeutic Use among Persons Aged 12 or Older: 1985 through 2004." It is a line graph, where the horizontal represents the study year, and the vertical axis represents the percentage using nonmedical prescription-type psychotherapeutics in the past year. There is a note below the graph that reads, "Data points represent surveys conducted since 1985. The 1985 through 1998 data are from NHSDA (PAPI), the 1999 through 2001 data are from NHSDA (CAI), and the 2002 through 2004 data are from NSDUH (CAI). The three series of NSDUH/NHSDA data use different methodologies and are not comparable with the other series."

Using PAPI, NHSDA shows that the percentage of persons aged 12 or older with past month nonmedical use of prescription-type psychotherapeutics was 6.2 percent in 1985. This decreased sharply to 3.4 percent in 1990, and then steadily to 2.6 percent in 1998. Using CAI, NHSDA shows that the percentage using prescription-type psychotherapeutics in the past month was 4.2 percent in 1999, which increased slightly to 4.9 percent in 2001. Also using CAI, NSDUH shows that the percentage using prescription-type psychotherapeutics in 2002 was 6.2 percent. This remained steady through 2004, where the rate was 6.1 percent.
