Figure 7.4 is titled "Illicit Drug or Alcohol Dependence or Abuse, by Age and Gender: 2004." It is a bar graph, where age categories are shown on the horizontal axis, and the percentage dependent or abusing in the past year is shown on the vertical axis. There are three age categories: aged 12 or older, aged 12 to 17, and aged 18 or older. For each age category, there is a bar representing males and a bar representing females.

Among persons aged 12 or older, 12.7 percent of males and 6.2 percent of females had past year illicit drug or alcohol abuse or dependence.
Among youths aged 12 to 17, 8.7 percent of males and 9.0 percent of females had past year illicit drug or alcohol abuse or dependence.
Among adults aged 18 or older, 13.2 percent of males and 5.9 percent of females had past year illicit drug or alcohol abuse or dependence.
