Figure 5.4 is titled "Past Year Marijuana Initiation among Youths Aged 12 to 17 Who Had Never Used, by Gender: 2002 through 2004." This is a bar graph, where gender is shown on the horizontal axis and the percentage initiating marijuana use in the past year is shown on the vertical axis. For each gender, there are bars representing 2002, 2003, and 2004. Tests of statistical significance at the .05 level were performed between 2003 and 2004 estimates and between 2002 and 2004 estimates; significant results are indicated where appropriate.

Among males aged 12 to 17, 6.3 percent initiated marijuana use in the past year in 2002, 5.2 percent initiated in 2003, and 5.3 percent initiated in 2004. The difference between the 2004 estimate and the 2002 estimate was significant.
Among females aged 12 to 17, 6.7 percent initiated marijuana use in the past year in 2002, 6.2 percent initiated in 2003, and 6.3 percent initiated in 2004.
