WASHINGTON, D.C. - Olivier C. Carduner was sworn in today as the U.S. Agency for International Development's (USAID's) new mission director for the Regional Development Mission for Asia (RDMA). Headquartered in Bangkok Thailand, the RDMA manages programs in Burma, China, Laos, Thailand and Vietnam.

Mosina Jordan, USAID's counselor and Acting Assistant Administrator for the Management Bureau, administered the oath of office.

"Olivier has an impressive career, and his 27 years at USAID proves he is the right person to tackle the challenges ahead in the Asia region," Jordan said. "This agency's work on issues there - including human trafficking, avian influenza, HIV/AIDS, good governance, economic reforms, the environment and humanitarian assistance - will benefit from his dynamic leadership and exceptional expertise."

USAID's regional offices are considered an effective way to deal with the many issues that do not recognize national boundaries.

Beginning his USAID career in 1980, Carduner was most recently the Mission Director of USAID/Senegal, with previous postings in Egypt, Bangladesh, Bolivia and Washington, D.C. Before arriving in Senegal in June 2003, Carduner was the Director of the Office of South American Affairs in USAID/Washington. From 1998 to 2000 he also led the development of Agency-wide policies for strategy development, implementation, and performance management as well as a related core training curriculum for USAID staff worldwide. Carduner was promoted to the rank of Minister Counselor in 2004.

Carduner, grew up in Ann Arbor, Michigan and received a bachelor's degree from the University of Michigan, and master's degrees from Georgetown University's School of Foreign Service and the National Defense University.
