Regional Team: LAC

Disaster Declared:
12/08/2006

Brief Description:
On November 24 and 25, 2006, unusually heavy rainfall led to flooding in Haiti's Northwest, Nippes, and Grand-Anse departments. As a result of the flooding, 6 people died, 4 people remained missing, 6 people were injured, and approximately 13,000 people were affected, according to preliminary assessments by the Haitian Ministry of Interior, various non-governmental organizations and U.N. agencies, and the U.N. Stabilization Mission in Haiti. Flooding also destroyed 617 houses, washed away bridges, and damaged 175 houses, 2 hospitals, 8 water systems, and 10 schools.

On December 8, U.S. Chargé d'Affaires Thomas C. Tighe declared a disaster due to the extent of the damage caused by the flooding. In response, OFDA provided $50,000 through USAID/Haiti for the local procurement and distribution of relief commodities, and to support efforts of the Ministry of Public Works to clear roads blocked by mud and landslides. OFDA Regional Advisors continued to monitor conditions in affected areas in consultation with USAID/Haiti.
