(Zion, Illinois) - Recreational use of Adeline Jay Geo-Karis Illinois Beach State Park (IBSP) is not expected to harm people's health, says the federal Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR). Both ATSDR and the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommend that the Illinois Department of Natural Resources continue to conduct regular beach sweeps and advise the public of the presence of asbestos-containing material. If asbestos-containing materials are found, IBSP visitors should report them to beach staff and should not attempt to remove the material or otherwise disturb it. (Elkhart, Indiana) - Two decades after contamination was first found in Elkhart groundwater, federal officials continue to advise people who live in affected areas and use private wells to take precautions. The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) released its public health assessment of the site March 2 and is welcoming public comment on the assessment until March 31. (Sandoval County, Rio Rancho, New Mexico) - The federal Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) concludes that for most of the chemicals measured in the outdoor air, the available air monitoring data are not adequate to evaluate fully the potential public health consequences of the Intel-New-Mexico air emissions. ATSDR recommends several public health actions including exploring the possibility of conducting additional sampling and monitoring to characterize residential exposures, physician health education, and reduction of air emissions where feasible. ATSDR is issuing the health consultation for public comment on February 2, 2009. Public comments will be accepted through April 3, 2009. (Loudoun County, Sterling, Virginia) - The federal Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) has completed a draft public health assessment (PHA) evaluating the public health impact of chemicals released from the Hidden Lane Landfill site near Sterling, Virginia. Former operations of this closed landfill resulted in contamination of private wells in the area with volatile organic compounds such as trichloroethylene.
