NPVU - Information Log 2000
9 December 2002: ***Specific links to RFC verification for CNRFC and NWRFC from 1999 into 2000, as well as the Western Region Follow-on Assessment, are no longer active (these links are interspersed earlier on in this log, and can be identified by labels such as "CNRFC" or "NWRFC", or by a specific link location). However, the conference presentations are still active.***
12 January 2001: December 2000: gridded QPF verification statistics of Day 2 and Day 3 06-hour forecasts for CBRFC and CNRFC domains are now available (will backbuild).
11 January 2001: December 2000: gridded QPF verification statistics for all RFC domains except NWRFC are now available.
In addition to Day 1 statistics, statistics for the individual 6-hr periods in Day1 are generated
CAUTION is again recommended for RFC domains where frozen precipitation is dominant; specifically MBRFC, NCRFC, & MARFC. Comparison of the observed precipitation interval distribution to the forecast interval distribution yields this conclusion.
20 December 2000: QPF Verification statistics for the CBRFC and CNRFC domains (November 2000; gridded) are now available.
13 December 2000: Comparison Plots interface has been developed to visualize the data being used in verification statistics.
11 December 2000: RFC QPF Verification statistics for November 2000 are now available via the NPVU QPF Verification interface.
WARNING QPF Verification Statistics for November 2000 may be inaccurate due to problems with the gridded precipitation analyses in frozen precipitation situations. This is particularly evident in those RFC domains in the northern part of the country.
02 November 2000: RFC QPF Verification statistics for October 2000 are now available via the NPVU QPF Verification interface.
30 October 2000: NPVU RFC Data interface is nearly fully functional with the following data available:
RFC & Mosaic QPF, QPE, and FFG gif images;
RFC HYD bulletins; and
RFC QPS products.
HYD bulletins are now available. These are bulletins sent by the River Forecast Centers to NCEP each day for the previous 12Z to 12Z period. At a minimum, the bulletins contain quality-controlled 24-hr observed point precipitation amounts. The CNRFC is the only RFC that does not currently send in QC'd data. This may change shortly. Some bulletins also contain 6-hr precipitation amounts. A few RFCs break their bulletins up into several bulletins: NCRFC, NWRFC (event dependent), & SERFC.
20 October 2000: QPS (Quantitative Precipitation Summary) bulletins are now available. Most of the values are for MAP (Mean Areal Precipitation - sub-basin) areas; however, point data are provided in the bulletins from the three Western Region RFCs.
16 October 2000: Access to the Mosaic Images now available via the NPVU RFC Data page
12 October 2000: Prototype NPVU RFC Data page launched. Link is added to NPVU Home page.
10 October 2000: RFC QPF Verification statistics for September 2000 are now available via the NPVU QPF Verification page.
***MARFC statistics are suspect due to 18Z QPFs being confused as 12Z QPFs - Correction was made on 22 September 2000.***
04 October 2000: NPVU QPF Verification page launched. Link is added to NPVU Home page.
QPF Verification statistics by River Forecast Center domain are now available. Monthly statistics are computed for Day 1 (f000-f024) 06h QPFs issued for the 12Z cycle.
August 2000: statistics are now available.
***MARFC statistics are suspect due to 18Z QPFs being confused with 12Z QPFs - Correction was made on 22 September 2000.***
06 April 2000: Now available: March 2000 and November 2000 through March 2000 CNRFC & NWRFC gridded & point verification statistics based on observed, forecast, and observed and forecast amounts.
Western Region Follow-on Assessment Case Studies verification statistics are now produced for selected periods of flooding in the CNRFC & the NWRFC.
16 March 2000: Now available: February 2000 and November 1999 through February 2000 CNRFC & NWRFC gridded & point verification statistics based on observed, forecast, and observed and forecast amounts. Previous month's statistics will be recomputed over the coming days.
Gif images of the gridded observations and forecasts are also availablei to view by month for CNRFC.
A new Conferences, Presentations, Etc. page has been created (accessible from the main NPVU page) to provide any available information that is presentated in group settings.
08 February 2000: Now available: January 2000 and November 1999 through January 2000 CNRFC & NWRFC gridded & point verification statistics based on observed amounts.
Gif images of the point observations and forecasts are also available to view by month for CNRFC & NWRFC.
31 January 2000: Now available: November 1999 through December 1999 CNRFC & NWRFC gridded & point verification statistics based on observed amounts.
24 January 2000: Now available: December 1999 CNRFC gridded verification statistics based on observed amounts ( http://www.hpc.ncep.noaa.gov/npvu/wrfa/cnrfc/199912/)
21 January 2000: Now available: December 1999 CNRFC point verification statistics based on observed amounts ( http://www.hpc.ncep.noaa.gov/npvu/wrfa/cnrfc/199912/)
18 January 2000: Now available: December 1999 NWRFC verification statistics based on observed amounts ( http://www.hpc.ncep.noaa.gov/npvu/wrfa/nwrfc/199912/)
22 December 1999 Now available: Gridded CNRFC verification statistics based on observed amounts ( http://www.hpc.ncep.noaa.gov/npvu/wrfa/cnrfc/)
Provided a LEGEND for the error statistics.
15 December 1999 Release to the world the NPVU Web site @ http://www.hpc.ncep.noaa.gov/npvu/.
The outline of the Western Region Follow-on Assessment ( html, pdf) is posted to explain the approved assessment process.
Mean Absolute Error (MAE) graphics of the first month of the Western Region Follow-on Assessment are now available. These statistics have only been computed at the forecast points on 06-hour intervals based upon the observed amounts.
Error statistics based upon both forecast AND observed amount (the double both method) as well as gridded verification statistics will be available shortly.
24 November 1999 Creation of the NPVU Web site and home page.
