USAID strongly supports activities to improve child health and reduce child mortality worldwide through a variety of programs. In FY 2007, funding for child survival and maternal health totaled nearly $443 million.

USAID's child survival program focuses on promoting simple, cost-effective interventions to:
  • decrease infant and child mortality
  • educate people on behavior risks associated with the transmission of HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted infections
  • support sustainable development through health policy and systems development
  • improve environmental conditions for better health
