Figure 8.4 is titled "Major Depressive Episodes in the Past Year among Persons Aged 12 or Older, by Age and Gender: 2004." It is a bar graph, where age in years is shown on the horizontal axis, and the percentage with a major depressive episode (MDE) in the past year is shown on the vertical axis. For each age category, there is a bar representing males and a bar representing females.

Among persons aged 12 or older, 5.5 percent of males and 10.6 percent of females had MDE in the past year.
Among youths aged 12 to 17, 5.0 percent of males and 13.1 percent of females had MDE in the past year.
Among young adults aged 18 to 25, 7.0 percent of males and 13.3 percent of females had MDE in the past year.
Among adults aged 26 or older, 5.3 percent of males and 9.8 percent of females had MDE in the past year.
