Figure 7.5 is titled "Illicit Drug or Alcohol Dependence or Abuse among Persons Aged 12 or Older, by County Type: 2002 through 2004." It is a bar graph, where the county type is shown on the horizontal axis, and the percentage dependent or abusing in the past year is shown on the vertical axis. County type is broken down into five groups: (1) large metropolitan counties, (2) small metropolitan counties, (3) urbanized nonmetropolitan counties, (4) less urbanized nonmetropolitan counties, and (5) rural nonmetropolitan counties. For each county type there are bars representing 2002, 2003, and 2004. Tests of statistical significance at the .05 level were performed between 2003 and 2004 estimates and between 2002 and 2004 estimates; significant results are indicated where appropriate.

The percentage of persons aged 12 or older in large metropolitan counties with past year substance abuse or dependence was 9.5 percent in 2002, 9.1 percent in 2003, and 9.5 percent in 2004.
The percentage in small metropolitan counties with past year substance abuse or dependence was 9.7 percent in 2002, 9.5 percent in 2003, and 9.8 percent in 2004.
The percentage in urbanized nonmetropolitan counties with past year substance abuse or dependence was 8.6 percent in 2002, 9.3 percent in 2003, and 9.7 percent in 2004.
The percentage in less urbanized nonmetropolitan counties with past year substance abuse or dependence was 8.6 percent in 2002, 8.3 percent in 2003, and 7.2 percent in 2004. The difference between the 2004 estimate and 2002 estimate was significant.
The percentage in rural nonmetropolitan counties with past year substance abuse or dependence was 7.5 percent in 2002, 5.7 percent in 2003, and 7.0 percent in 2004.
