The DASIS Report:  Trends in Marijuana Treatment Admissions by State: 1992-2002

Highlights:

  • Based on SAMHSA's Treatment Episode Data Set (TEDS), substance abuse treatment admission rates for marijuana as their primary substance of abuse increased nationally by 162% from 45 admissions per 100,000 persons aged 12 or older in 1992 to 118 admissions per 100,000 persons aged 12 or older in 2002.
  • Overall, the primary marijuana treatment admission rates increased in 41 States and decreased in 3 States between 1992 and 2002.
  • The number of States with marijuana treatment admission rates of 139 or more per 100,000 persons aged 12 or older increased from no States in 1992 to 21 States in 2002. The number of States with rates less than 50 per 100,000 decreased from 26 States in 1992 to six States in 2002.
