National Asian American/Pacific Islander Heritage Month - May 2009

Asian and Pacific Islander heritage month has been officially celebrated in the United States for more than a quarter century. It began when President Jimmy Carter signed a joint resolution to declare the first Asian Pacific Heritage Week as May 4-10, 1979. Then, 11 years later, an official extension made this week-long celebration into a month-long event. On October 23, 1992, May was officially designated as the time to celebrate Asian Pacific Islander heritage.
