June 28 — 29, 2007 Advisory Committee Meeting
Minutes
Cardio-Respiratory Health
Dr. Kraus next provided an overview of cardio-respiratory health and
challenges that will arise relative to physical activity recommendations.
Cardiovascular disease is a continuum of metabolic risk, some inherited risk,
and a lot of environmental risk.
Assessing the impact of one of the environmental components on that
cardiovascular risk and its particular outcomes can be a challenge in
intervention studies as well as observational studies, due to the fact that you
don’t know if you are affecting the mediator of the effect or actually the
disease itself nor will you necessarily know the stage of the disease which will
affect what type of physical activity recommendation is given.
The Committee will also have to address the issue of whether it uses fitness
as a surrogate, or fitness as an outcome of cardio respiratory health. The group
should address the metabolic risk factors for cardiovascular disease, which
include diabetes, and how they interact with the metabolic obesity group.
When reviewing the data one must also account for the different end points of
cardiovascular disease itself (i.e. myocardial infarction, stroke, etc.)
