Once lost Dean Kelley rights treatise is now online
The First Amendment Center has placed online the once unavailable five-volume treatise of the late Rev. Dean M. Kelley, the nationally known National Council of Churches executive for religious liberty. The Law of Church and State in America is a 20-year research masterpiece that was completed by Kelley but left unpublished after his death in 1997. "When Dean Kelley died, an enormous amount of knowledge and experience died with him," said Wesley M. "Pat" Pattillo, the NCC's Senior Program Director for Justice and Advocacy and Communication. "Now, this remarkable  publishing venture will make much of that knowledge accessible again for all religious groups working their way through First Amendment issues and church-state controversies." Kelley, who served the Council from 1960 to 1990, was a nationally recognized expert in the field who had defended the rights of such diverse groups as the Unification Church, Taos Pueblo Indians, Church of Scientology, Old Order Amish, Christian Scientists, Roman Catholics, Jews, Muslims and mainline Protestants. "Kelley's work at the Council was extraordinary and historic," said the Rev. Dr. Michael Kinnamon, NCC General Secretary. "Thanks to the First  Amendment Center, this once-lost work is now available to a new generation of people who value their freedom to practice their religion as they are led by their faith and intellect." Walking and Praying Together for 100 Years

2008 marked 100 years since the Federal Council of Churches was founded in Philadelphia. The past century has been rich with events and programs in which all member communions have played an important role: civil rights, peace, Bible translation, evangelism, church school development, faith and order, interfaith relations and many more. Between January and December, a Web series of historical "ecumenical moments" appeared each month. These remarkable stories can be revisited here.
The Ecumenical Moments are:
January: marching together; February: clearing the air; March: a modest peace plan; April: a voice for civil rights; May: Social Creed' June: The RSV a best seller; July: Sterling Cary remembers; August: Bombs of August; September: Cynthia's song; October: Jorge Lara-Braud; November: Presidential should have-beens; December: A Birthday Card
