HIV/AIDS, Europe and Eurasia
From 1995 to 2002, the Europe and
Eurasia region recorded the world's steepest increase
in HIV and syphilis infections. At the end of 2004, approximately 1.4 million
people in the region are living with HIV/AIDS. In Russia,
over 60 percent of new HIV cases are among 18 to 25 year-olds.
Sexually transmitted infection rates among young people are
unusually high and indicate a serious vulnerability for HIV
infection among youth. USAID has HIV/AIDS programs in 13
countries in Europe and Eurasia, and has three regional programs.
