Benefits of Sponsoring a Local Program

By sponsoring a local Home Performance with ENERGY STAR program in their market, organizations can help to:

  • Reduce homeowners' high energy bills and address comfort problems;
  • Focus attention on cost-effective, energy-efficient home improvements that go beyond traditional equipment and appliance replacement rebate programs;
  • Stimulate the local economy and create jobs;
  • Improve public perception by being an advocate for energy efficiency and renewable energy;
  • Reduce air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions.

For utilities, Home Performance with ENERGY STAR can also help meet Public Utility Commission energy efficiency and renewable energy mandates and deliver peak demand reductions, delay or avoid energy supply investments, and provide an opportunity to consolidate program delivery to residential customers. It is estimated that a mature local Home Performance with ENERGY STAR program can achieve a cost of conserved energy of $0.05/kWh.

Examples of Home Performance with ENERGY STAR results include:

  • In 2005, Texas-based municipal utility Austin Energy had over 70 contractors participating in its Home Performance with ENERGY STAR program, completing 1400 projects and achieving a peak demand savings of over 3000 kW.
  • Since 2001, over 150 contractors participating in NYSERDA's Home Performance with ENERGY STAR program have improved the energy efficiency of more than 11,000 homes and saved New Yorkers over 16,000 MWh of electricity and over 700,000 MMBtu of fossil fuels. As of 2005, the On-Peak Coincident Demand Reduction attributed to the program was 1.7 MW.
  • Wisconsin Focus on Energy estimates that their Home Performance with ENERGY STAR program is saving, on average, 1100 kWh of electricity and 500 therms of natural gas per home.
