THE LEUKEMIA & LYMPHOMA SOCIETY (LLS) | 60 YEARS OF INNOVATION

"Why LLS" provides an overview of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society

In 2009, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) celebrates its 60th anniversary and its commitment to curing blood cancers and helping patients and their families. The following excerpt was taken from a speech by John E. Walter, LLS's president and CEO, at the Annual Strategic Leadership Conference in November 2008.

"The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society is celebrating 60 years of helping patients live better, longer lives. We are, and always will be, committed to our critical mission: Cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families.

As we approached our 60th year, I found myself thinking about our future and the ambitious goals we have set. And I wondered, 'What is it about LLS that will make it possible for us to achieve those goals?'

According to research, all companies and organizations, in order to survive and thrive in this world, must possess the following competencies: customer service, operational skill and an ability to innovate. But only one of those competencies is what drives an organization. Looking at the big picture and determining the single characteristic that shines through everything we do -- our services for patients, our research programs, our advocacy work and our revenue-generation programs -- what quickly becomes apparent is that LLS is -- above all else -- innovative. This trait shows up everywhere in our 60 years of existence.

Innovation is what has made LLS the successful organization it is today. It is responsible for our tremendous growth and the great strides in patient treatments and support we have provided. And I am unshakeable in my belief that because we are intrinsically innovative, LLS is indeed the organization we need to be to achieve our ultimate goal -- cures for blood cancers."
