What are the most popular names given to babies?
  Question
What are the most popular names given to babies?
  Answer

Every year, Social Security does a study of the most popular names  given to applicants who were born in the current year.

The top ten boys and girls names for 2008 are:

Top 10 Names for 2008
Rank Male name Female name
1 Jacob Emma
2 Michael Isabella
3 Ethan Emily
4 Joshua Madison
5 Daniel Ava
6 Alexander Olivia
7 Anthony Sophia
8 William Abigail
9 Christopher Elizabeth
10 Matthew Chloe

After a 12-year reign as the most popular baby name, Emily has slipped to third on the list. Emma is now the nation's most popular name for girls.

Jacob has topped the list since 1999. But Alexander, which didn't even make last year's top-10 list, takes the number 6 spot.

In addition to a list of the 1,000 most popular boys' and girls' names for 2008, the website has a list of the top 100 names for twins born in 2008. Jacob and Joshua are again the most popular twin's names.

The Social Security website offers lists of baby names for each year since 1880. Social Security started compiling baby name lists in 1997.
