The Hiring Process

The hiring process at USCIS is straightforward and quick if you remember these key points:

  • Read all directions to ensure you have submitted the correct materials
  • After submitting an application, check your USA Jobs account periodically for updates
  • Mail documents (e.g., job acceptance letter, security paperwork) in a timely manner

During the vacancy announcement period

  • When positions are announced, they will include both an opening date and a closing date. Please ensure you review the following when applying for a position:
  • The minimum qualifications for the position description of the position to ensure it meets your interests
  • The location of the position (USCIS has offices around the world, so it’s important to consider the locations where you are willing to live)
  • The steps in the hiring process (the process listed in this section is general to all vacancies; the vacancy announcement will describe specific steps for that vacancy)
  • That you have submitted all necessary documents; incomplete applications will extend the process
  • Some positions may require an examination, which will be described in the vacancy announcement

You should always print and keep a copy of the vacancy announcements for which you apply. The announcement will have the contact information for the position, which you can use to check on the status of your application.

After the vacancy announcement is closed
Make sure you submit all necessary documents that are requested of you. All applicants will be notified on the final status of their application once selections have been made.

Identifying the best candidates
You will be sent a notice acknowledging the receipt of your application. Once the vacancy announcement closes, USCIS will review all applications to identify those individuals that do not meet minimum qualifications. Remember to check your account on USA Jobs to track your status in the hiring process.

Those candidates who meet the minimum qualifications will then be reviewed to determine if they are among the "best qualified" candidates. Once the "best qualified" candidates are identified, the supervisor (or selecting official) for the position will review the applications and determine who among the "best qualified" will be interviewed (note that interviews may or may not take place). Reference checks may also be conducted.

After the selection is made
Once a selection is made for a position, all applicants will be notified on the final status of their application. Selected candidates will begin the background investigation process. Successfully completing a background investigation is required to work at USCIS.
