Refugee Officer

Key Role

As a Refugee Officer, you will be representing USCIS in its dealings with refugees all around the world.  Your role will be to interview and determine the eligibility of applicants who are applying to be resettled in the U.S. as refugees. This includes determining whether the facts of the applications fulfill the legal requirements for the benefit sought, evaluating the credibility of testimony, and analyzing and verifying the authenticity and relevance of supporting documents.

 

Your primary responsibilities may include:

  • Traveling to overseas locations (e.g., East and West Africa, Middle East, Asia) for the purpose of adjudicating refugee-related applications
  • Adjudicating applications arising under various sections of the Immigration and Nationality Act that fall within the jurisdiction of the Office of Refugee Affairs; preparing written assessments of findings
  • Researching various political climates, human rights conditions, and cultural practices of refuges submitting applications
  • Performing a variety of functions that support the overseas adjudication mission, including fraud detection and prevention, training support, and administrative/logistical support

 

Characteristics of a successful Refugee Officer candidate include:

  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and discretion
  • Ability to research and analyze legal information in order to apply appropriate laws and procedures
  • Ability to articulate information effectively both orally and in writing with people from diverse backgrounds
  • Ability to travel overseas for up to 180 days per year as required and to work in often challenging locations with limited services
