Employment Requirements

All positions at USCIS have the following requirements; see the jobs' specific vacancy announcement for position specific requirements.

  • You must be a U.S. citizen.
  • You must successfully complete a background investigation.
  • You must submit and pass a drug test.

Candidates not currently employed by USCIS must have, for three of the last five years immediately prior to applying for the position(s):

  • Resided in the U.S,
  • Worked for the U.S. government as an employee overseas in a federal or military capacity.
  • Been a dependent of a U.S. federal or military employee serving overseas.

Male applicants born in 1960 or later will be required to complete a Statement of Selective Service Registration.

 

Newly hired employees may be required to serve a probationary period of one year.
