Can I cancel my Social Security number?

No. Once you have a Social Security number, we cannot cancel or destroy the record. By law, Social Security must maintain wage and self-employment income records for each individual whose work is covered under the program. Your number is considered relevant and necessary for that record keeping purpose. Consequently, valid numbers are permanently part of our records.
