Biosketch:
Eugene G. Hayunga, Ph.D., Director of the NICHD Office of Extramural Policy, is responsible for activities related to the development, implementation and dissemination of policies and procedures regarding the Institute’s extramural research programs, to include coordinating the publication of Funding Opportunity Announcements for new and continuing initiatives, assuring appropriate implementation of federal regulations and policies for research administration, monitoring compliance after award, developing staff training programs, and providing guidance to NICHD staff and potential applicants as needed. Dr. Hayunga has held a number of senior leadership positions in review, program, and policy at the NIH. Prior to joining the NICHD, he was the Chief of the Extramural Project Review Branch in the Office of Scientific Affairs, National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), and Research Policy Officer in the NIH Office of Research on Women’s Health (ORWH) where he helped develop NIH policy and procedures related to the inclusion of women and minorities as subjects in clinical research.
Dr. Hayunga received his B.S. degree from Fordham University in New York and his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees both from the State University of New York at Albany. His research career in tropical medicine and parasitology has included positions at the USDA, the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, and the Naval Medical Research Institute. In 1997, he worked on Medicare reform as a Legislative Fellow with the United States Senate. A decorated combat veteran, Dr. Hayunga has also served in a number of challenging active duty and reserve assignments with the United States Army.
