Resources for Public Libraries

Public libraries in the United States have a long history of helping immigrants integrate into their communities and better understand life in their new country. USCIS and the Office of Citizenship seek to build upon this tradition by supporting the resource needs of public libraries. This effort is an important aspect of a nationwide library initiative under the direction of the President's Task Force on New Americans.

Strategic Objectives:

• Improve access to USCIS Office of Citizenship immigrant civic literacy publications at public libraries
• Support the role of public libraries in promoting immigrant civic literacy, including programming for immigrants
• Expand access to naturalization test study materials

The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), an independent grant-making Federal agency, is a lead sponsor of this initiative. The IMLS is the primary source of federal support for the nation's 122,000 libraries and 17,500 museums.
