Ambassador Withers recognizes Vera Lesko as Albania’s first Woman of Courage for her extraordinary work with trafficking victims.

In observance of Women’s History Month, U.S Ambassador John L. Withers II hosted a March 12 ceremony to honor Vera Lesko as the Woman of Courage for Albania and as a finalist for the 2009 U.S. Secretary of State’s International Women of Courage Award. Lesko, the Director of a USAID-funded shelter for trafficking victims in Vlora, was among over 80 exceptional women worldwide nominated by U.S. Embassies for their work in advancing human rights. The International Women of Courage Award is the only U.S. Department of State award that recognizes outstanding women leaders across the globe for their courage and leadership in struggling for social justice.
