Project Summary Sheet

U.S Geological Survey, South Florida Ecosystem Program: Place Based Studies

Project: Elevation Data Collection Project

Web Site: http://sofia.usgs.gov

Location: Central Everglades Subregion; Miami-Dade, Monroe, and Broward Counties

Principal Investigator: Greg Desmond, gdesmond@usgs.gov, 703/648-4728

Project Personnel: Vince Caruso, vcaruso@usgs.gov, 703.648.4586; Ed Cyran, ejcyran@usgs.gov, 703.648.4662; Bob Glover, rglover@usgs.gov, 703.648.5056; Chuck Henkle, chenkle@usgs.gov, 703.648.5129; Gordon Shupe, gshupe@usgs.gov, 703.648.4661

Other Supporting Organizations: Everglades National Park (Kevin Kotun, kevin_kotun@nps.gov, 305.242.7829

Associated Projects: None

Overview & Status: Modeling of sheet flow and water surface levels in the Everglades is very sensitive to changes in elevation due to the expansive and extremely low relief terrain. Therefore, this project is applying state-of-the-art technology to perform a regional topographic survey that meets a vertical accuracy specification of 15 centimeters (6 inches).

Needs & Products: To date, portions of more than thirty 7.5’ quadrangles have been surveyed. The surveys are being conducted by using differential global positioning system (DGPS) technology and a USGS developed helicopter-based instrument known as the Airborne Height Finder (AHF). In some areas, the surveying is accomplished by airboat. Lastly, a new technology known as LIDAR (Light Detection And Ranging) is being evaluated for producing accurate elevation data.

Application to Everglades Restoration: The project supports the restoration and resource management efforts by providing critical data for the parameterization of numerical hydrologic and ecological models. Water resources and land management decisions will rely heavily on the results of these simulation models. It is imperative to derive and use the most accurate elevation data available for the models to produce meaningful results.
