Challenges

Education is the foundation for future development in Southeast and East Asia. However, education challenges in the region include high numbers of out-of-school youth, lack of employment readiness, low secondary school enrollment rates, insufficient higher education and teacher training opportunities, and dated curricula. Vulnerable and disadvantaged groups—such as women and girls, minorities, refugees, migrants, and persons with disabilities—have particular difficulty in accessing quality education.

USAID Response

USAID is focused on equipping youth with the skills necessary for full participation in the global economy. USAID works to increase access to quality education and relevant training opportunities in the region, especially for vulnerable groups. USAID programs bring together governments, schools, communities and non-governmental organizations to improve primary, secondary and higher education, as well as community-based formal and non-formal education.
