Outstanding service-learning leaders were honored on March 19, 2009, with Spirit of Service Awards at the National Service Learning Conference.  Adam Handy, a senior at Belfry High School in Pike County, Kentucky, who serves as president of the Pike County Youth Leadership Council. Under his leadership, the council has addressed numerous issues, including convincing the City of Pikeville to make all public areas smoke-free, in recognition of Kentucky’s status as leading all states in deaths from tobacco use. spacer

Outstanding service-learning leaders were honored on March 19, 2009, with Spirit of Service Awards at the National Service Learning Conference.  Dawn Davis, an English Language Learner teacher at Moriarty Elementary School in Norwich, Connecticut, who established a school-community garden that supplies fresh vegetables to local charities and food pantries while offering lessons in sciences, health and nutrition, math and measurement skills. spacer

Outstanding service-learning leaders were honored on March 19, 2009, with Spirit of Service Awards at the National Service Learning Conference.  The second grade class at Pittsburgh Elementary School, Pittsburg, Texas, who have established and supported scholarships, made public service announcements, and spoken to groups of up to 500 people on numerous education issues. On March 17th, 2009, YouthBuild U.S.A. held an event in celebration of their 30th anniversary.  The event, held on the National Mall in Washington, DC, was attended by First Lady Michelle Obama, Senator John Kerry, Martin Luther King III, Alan Solomont (Chair of the Corporation's Board of Directors), and Corporation Acting Director Nicola Goren.  “Community service is an integral part of empowering our people and making our communities stronger. And service must become a part of each of our lives," said Mrs. Obama. “At a time in our nation when so many are struggling, we have to remember that everyone can make a difference and that we all have something to contribute.”  YouthBuild has been part of AmeriCorps since 1994 and is one of the largest AmeriCorps programs. spacer

On March 17th, 2009, YouthBuild U.S.A. held an event in celebration of their 30th anniversary on the National Mall in Washington, DC.  In the closing ceremony, Solomont described the current economic crisis as an unprecedented moment of need and opportunity for national service, and thanked the President and Congressional leaders for seizing this moment and helping to usher in a new generation of national service programs. Solomont announced that the Corporation will add to its existing investment in YouthBuild by supporting a new national partnership that will place at least 100 new AmeriCorps VISTA members in fifty YouthBuild programs across the country over the next year. These VISTAs will strengthen local YouthBuild programs by attracting new resources, planning new projects, and expanding their capacity. spacer
