WASHINGTON, DC - The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) has deployed a Disaster Assistance Response Team (DART) to the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) to assist with the relief effort for the ongoing complex emergency.

"We are extremely concerned about the situation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Thousands of people are in dire need of assistance, and the volatile security situation hampers the humanitarian effort," said USAID Administrator Henrietta H. Fore. "Our DART will work alongside local officials and the international community to assess needs and to provide assistance to those in need as quickly as possible."

The U.S. government has provided more than $123 million for emergency programs in the DRC for agriculture and food security, health, Internally Displaced Persons assistance, nutrition, protection, and water, sanitation, and hygiene in fiscal year 2008.
