USAID Administrator Tours Ghana Malaria Control Center

ACCRA, GHANA - Henrietta Fore, Director of U.S. Foreign Assistance and Administrator of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) toured the Ghana Malaria Control Center for a demonstration of indoor residual spraying and bed nets. Fore's visit coincided with the High Level Forum for Aid Effectiveness in Accra, Ghana. The success of Ghana's Ministry of Health and its activities at the Malaria Control Center illustrates several core principles of aid effectiveness: country ownership, accountability and inclusive partnerships. More than 3 million cases of malaria are reported every year in Ghana, more than 900,000 of those cases are young children.

"The vision, foresight and strong leadership demonstrated by the Government of Ghana have significantly increased the magnitude and effectiveness of its fight against malaria. It's inspiring to see that solid, committed leadership makes a difference. That difference enables us to be better partners," said Administrator Fore. "The Government of Ghana had the vision of where it needed to go, and how to mobilize the resources that were provided by the United States through the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, in addition to President Bush's Malaria Initiative."

More than 100 donor and partner country ministers, leaders of development agencies, and civil society organizations are in attendance at the High Level Forum on Aid Effectiveness, September 2-4, 2008. Henrietta Fore serves as the U.S. Government delegation leader at the Forum for Aid Effectiveness.
